BIS Certification for Electronics: A Complete Guide for Indian Manufacturers (2026)

Under the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS), the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has mandated that several electronic products—ranging from laptops and mobile phones to LED lights and power banks—must bear the ISI or BIS Mark before they reach the consumer.

1. Why BIS is Mandatory for Electronics

The primary goal of BIS is to ensure that electronic devices do not explode, catch fire, or emit harmful radiation.

  • Consumer Safety: Ensures the product is safe for domestic use.

  • Market Access: Mandatory for selling on Amazon, Flipkart, or B2B marketplaces.

  • Legal Compliance: Prevents heavy penalties and seizure of stock by government authorities.

2. The Step-by-Step Certification Process

The process has become significantly more digital and streamlined in 2026.

  • Step 1: Product Testing: You must send samples of your product to a BIS-recognized lab. They test the device for parameters like insulation, thermal stability, and voltage fluctuations.

  • Step 2: Online Application: Once the lab issues a test report (valid for 90 days), you must apply on the “Manak Online” portal.

  • Step 3: Document Submission: Upload the test report, Business License (MSME/GST), and an authorization letter if the manufacturer is outside India.

  • Step 4: Grant of Registration: After verifying the documents and the test report, BIS grants a R-Number (Registration Number).

3. Essential Documents Required

To avoid delays, keep these ready:

  1. Aadhar/PAN of the Authorized Indian Representative (AIR).

  2. GST Registration of the manufacturing unit.

  3. Trademark Certificate (Proof of brand name).

  4. Product Technical Manual (Circuit diagrams and component lists).

4. Important Changes in 2026

With the Quality Control Orders (QCOs) becoming stricter this year, even small components like lithium-ion cells and specific power adapters now require individual BIS numbers. Manufacturers are also encouraged to use the “BIS Care App” to verify the authenticity of their raw material suppliers.

5. Cost and Timeline

  • Timeline: Usually takes 20 to 30 working days, depending on the lab’s testing schedule.

  • Validity: The registration is initially valid for 2 years and can be renewed subsequently.

Summary for Manufacturers

If you are manufacturing electronics in India, start the BIS process during the prototyping stage. Waiting until your stock is ready can lead to massive delays in your product launch.
